History of Ingram
The Village of Ingram traces its roots to 1884, when the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad built its line through the wilderness of eastern Rusk County on its way from Ladysmith toward Sault Ste. Marie. Because early steam engines required frequent stops, the railroad established a station midway between Glen Flora and Hawkins. The settlement was surveyed and platted in 1888, and by 1891 the young hamlet supported a post office, a rail station, and roughly fifty residents.
The community was named for Orrin Henry Ingram, a prominent Eau Claire lumber baron, and the village was formally established in 1885 as the logging industry took hold. A steam sawmill built in the settlement's early years was later sold to the French Lumbering Company of Chippewa Falls, cementing Ingram's role in the region's timber economy alongside its function as a railroad stop.
Today, Ingram continues to reflect its logging and railroad heritage while serving as a close-knit gateway to the Flambeau River State Forest and Rusk County Forest. Its history, recreational surroundings, and community traditions continue to shape the village's identity for residents and visitors alike.
